Mariah Carey is African American, Venezuelan and Irish. She is the third and youngest child of Patricia Hickey who is Irish American and Alfred Roy Carey, who is Afro-Venezuelan and African American.

Mariah’s parents divorced when she was three years old. While living in her childhood neighborhood of Huntington, Long Island, NY, racist neighbors allegedly poisoned the family dog and set fire to her family's car. Carey spent much of her time at home, alone, and turned to music to occupy herself. She began to sing at around the age of three, when her mother began to teach her. "I have a mother who is 100 percent Irish who raised me from my birth and who is my best friend. So if I were to say that I'm Black only, that would be negating everything she is. So when people ask, I say I'm Black, Venezuelan and Irish, because that's who I am."

Now, proud of her mixed heritage, Mariah has found fame and has the most #1 Billboard Hits, beating some of the most famous musicians in the world! In 2012, Carey was ranked second on VH1's list of the "100 Greatest Women in Music". Aside from her commercial accomplishments, Carey has won five Grammy Awards, 17 World Music Awards, 11 American Music Awards, and 31 Billboard Music Awards. Referred to as the "songbird supreme" by the Guinness World Records, she is famed for her five-octave vocal range, power, melismatic style and signature use of the whistle register.

Mariah is currently married to actor, comedian, radio, and television personality, Nick Cannon with whom she has twins – a boy and a girl.
