Onika Tanya Maraj parents are of mixed East-Indian and Afro-Trinidadian ancestry and she lived in Saint James with her grandmother until age five. Maraj is the middle sister to two brothers named Makiya and Jelani, as mentioned in her song I'm the Best on her debut Pink Friday. Her mother would occasionally visit, and one day, when Minaj was five, her mother picked her up to move to Queens. Nicki Manaj has recalled in interviews the tumultuous relationship between her parents and growing up in a somewhat hostile environment. But despite all odds Nicki was determined to be successful and focused on her love of acting as a child to get through.

She has received a number of awards, and has set precedents for female rap artists. She became the first female artist to be included on MTV's Annual Hottest MC List and was named the 2011 Rising Star by Billboard. Brent Staples of The New York Times suggests that some consider her "the most influential female rapper of all time.

Nicki Manaj lives in New York and has been rumored to be in a relationship with Safaree her longtime traveling partner and bodyguard.
