ROGER EBERT and CHARLIE ‘CHAZ’ HAMMEL-SMITH
Ebert is an American journalist, film critic and screenwriter, who has been described by Forbes as the most powerful pundit in America. Chaz is a trial attorney and is vice president of the Ebert Company.
Ebert co-wrote the screenplay with Russ Meyer the cult classic film ‘Beyond the Valley of the Dolls’. He has been friends with, and even dated Oprah Winfrey, who credits him with encouraging her to go into syndication. He is known for his film review column and television reviews with Gene Siskel. He has written more than 15 books on movie reviews and is the first film critic to win a Pulitzer Prize, as well as the first to be awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Roger and Chaz were married in July 1992 after they met in 1989. Roger was dinning out with an old friend Ann Landers. Chaz was at another table with some people Anne knew, and Roger was clearly taken with Chaz. The marriage proposal came during the Grand prix in Monte Carlo while they were sitting outside eating ice cream. She doesn’t remember if she said yes immediately. Roger says the proposed marriage seemed inevitable and it ordained. Chaz said we'll take each day as it comes. That's one of the reasons we were so attracted to each other, because we saw the positive attitude in each other.
Over the years there have been many medical problems they have had to deal with. She has stood by him through it all. Roger said, one thing I've discovered is that I love my job more than I thought I did, and I love my wife even more!"
She has two children from a previous marriage. He still continues to write despite his many medical problems.
